LOCATION - DHAKA, BANGLADESH.
Bangladesh
is situated between latitudes 20~34' and 26~38' north and latitudes 88~01' and
92~41' east. The country is bordered by India on the east, west and north and by
the Bay of Bengal on the south. There is also a small strip of frontier with
Burma on the southeastern edge. The land is a deltaic plain with a network of
numerous rivers and canals.
Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries of the world. Present population of the country is near about 150 million. According to the size of the population, it ranks as the 8th. most populous country in the world. But the geographical area is only 145,000 squire km. Climatic condition is semi-tropical. During the monsoon, there is heavy rainfall. winter is very comfortable - temparature comes to 10-20 degree celsius in the month of November, December and January., The rate of literacy is arround 60%,. The major export items are raw jute, Tea, Hides & skin and ready made garments., The country has huge Natural Gas reseve. The Peoples Republic of Bangladesh is officially a secular Country with Muslim majority of 90% Ninety eighty percent people speaks the National language Bangla- their mother tongue. Dhaka is the Capital of Bangladesh having almost 10 million people . It is a cosmopolitan city with all modern aminities. It is a city of 600 hundred years old. The other major city's are Chittagong, a sea port and commercial capital. Khulna and Rajshahi are other major city too.
The counry was liberated in December 1971 after 9 months of war of the occopation of Pakistani forces. Nerely three million people - they dedicated their lives for the cause of liberation.
The area which is now Bangladesh has a rich historical and cultural past, the product of the repeated influx of varied peoples, bringing with them the Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Mongol-Mughul, Arab, Persian, Turkic, and European cultures. About 1200 A.D., Muslim invaders under Sufi influence, supplanted Hindu and Buddhist dynasties, and converted most of the population of the eastern areas of Bengal to Islam. Since then, Islam has played a crucial role in the region's history and politics.
HISTORY OF THE DHAKA SHAMOLI LIONS CLUB.
The Lions Club of Dhaka Shamoli was chartered on the 2nd May, 1986 with twenty active members. Sponsoring club was the Lions Club of Dhaka Dilkusha. At present Shamoli has twentyfive active members and have in turn sponsored 15 Lions clubs in their district.
Shamoli have two permanent projects on a continueing basis and they are -
A Primary School with 250 students,
A Drug Rehabilitation Hospital with 30 beds.
